Neighbourhoods in Leiden
- Buying a house in the Professorenwijk
The Professorenwijk is the neighbourhood that Leiden families want to move to as soon as the second child arrives, and that almost nobody wants to leave. The houses often go from parent to child or from neighbour to neighbour. The university, the LUMC and the Bio Science Park provide a steady stream of new people looking, often from outside the Netherlands, and they are all standing in the same queue on Funda.

- Buying a house in the Burgemeesterswijk
The Burgemeesterswijk is to Leiden what the Professorenwijk also is: the neighbourhood families want to move to and where they stay. The houses have a garden and the centre is within walking distance. Little comes up for sale, and part of that goes outside Funda: from neighbour to neighbour, from parent to child, or to someone who had already come forward.
Burggravenlaan · Van Vollenhovenkade · Du Rieustraat · De Gijselaarstraat · postcode 2313
- Buying a house in the Vogelwijk
The Vogelwijk is the Leiden neighbourhood for families who want a pre-war house with a garden, close to the station and the LUMC, and not necessarily in the Professorenwijk. Those who buy here stay. Little comes up for sale and part of that goes outside Funda: from neighbour to neighbour, to a colleague from the hospital, or to someone who had already come forward.
Nachtegaallaan · Merelstraat · Lijsterstraat · Vinkenstraat · postcode 2333
- Buying a house in the Pieterswijk
The Pieterswijk is the part of Leiden's city centre around the Pieterskerk, and a neighbourhood where a house rarely appears on Funda. Around the churchyard sits the university, and some of the houses are let to students; the properties that belong to a resident stay in the same hands for a long time. If one comes free, it often goes to a neighbour, a colleague from the university, or someone who had already come forward.
