Buying a house in The Hague: the neighbourhoods that rarely reach Funda

In The Hague a share of the homes change hands without ever being on Funda, above all in the neighbourhoods below. If you want to live there, a personal letter reaches the owners best; each neighbourhood page names the streets people ask about and what the figures say.

Neighbourhoods in The Hague

  • Buying a house in the Statenkwartier

In the Statenkwartier I see the same movement every year: a family comes for a few years, often for an international organisation, and then stays after all. As a result the turnover is smaller than the neighbourhood suggests. The town houses that do come free are often first offered within the network of the owner or the estate agent; on Funda you then only see them as "sold subject to conditions".

    Frederik Hendriklaan · Statenlaan · Van Boetzelaerlaan · Prins Mauritslaan · postcode 2582, 2581

  • Buying a house in Benoordenhout

Benoordenhout is a neighbourhood where people buy a house to grow old in. The families who come here stay once the children have left. That is why so little comes up for sale, and why the houses that do come free go without Funda remarkably often: to an acquaintance, through an estate agent who has kept a list for years, or to someone who once wrote.

    Van Hoytemastraat · Breitnerlaan · Weissenbruchstraat · Wassenaarseweg · postcode 2596, 2597

  • Buying a house in Bezuidenhout

Bezuidenhout is the neighbourhood in The Hague where I see many people who come for a few years, for a ministry or an international organisation, and then do not want to leave. As a result the town houses in Oost stay in the same hands for a long time. When one comes free, the buyer is often already known: a colleague, a neighbour, someone who once sent a letter.

    Theresiastraat · Bezuidenhoutseweg · Juliana van Stolberglaan · Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indië · postcode 2593, 2594, 2595

  • Buying a house in the Archipelbuurt

The Archipelbuurt is small and quiet, and precisely because of that so little comes up for sale. Those who live here have a town house or a spacious flat within walking distance of the centre and do not just move. If something does come free, it has often already been discussed before any photos have been taken, and it goes to someone from the neighbourhood who wants to move from a flat to a whole house, or to a candidate an agent already had on his list.

    Bankastraat · Sumatrastraat · Riouwstraat · Javastraat · postcode 2585

  • Buying a house in the Zeeheldenkwartier

The Zeeheldenkwartier is The Hague neighbourhood where people start with a flat and then stay, because they no longer want to miss the life on the street and the centre around the corner. Small flats come onto Funda regularly, but the homes people are really waiting for, an upstairs flat with a roof terrace or a ground-floor flat with a garden, are rarely seen there. Those go through the neighbours in the same building, or to someone who had already come forward to the owner.

Piet Heinstraat · Prins Hendrikstraat · Zoutmanstraat · Van Speijkstraat · postcode 2518
