Buying a house in Maastricht: the neighbourhoods that rarely reach Funda

In Maastricht a share of the homes change hands without ever being on Funda, above all in the neighbourhoods below. If you want to live there, a personal letter reaches the owners best; each neighbourhood page names the streets people ask about and what the figures say.

Neighbourhoods in Maastricht

  • Buying a house in Wyck

Wyck is my own city at its best, and the neighbourhood where I most often have to disappoint people who are looking. I walk through it every week, from the station to the Maas, and I know enough residents to know that they are not leaving. What comes up for sale here has often already been sold before it is on Funda: to a neighbour, to the tenant upstairs, or to someone who once sent a letter.

    Rechtstraat · Hoogbrugstraat · Wycker Grachtstraat · Sint Maartenslaan · postcode 6221

  • Buying a house in the Jekerkwartier

The Jekerkwartier is the part of my city I most like to cycle through, and where I have to explain to people looking that patience is not a strategy. What comes free has often already gone before it is on Funda: to the neighbour who had had his eye on it for years, to the tenant upstairs, or to someone who once wrote a letter.

Sint Pieterstraat · Grote Looiersstraat · Lang Grachtje · Witmakersstraat · postcode 6211

  • Buying a house in Sint Pieter

Sint Pieter is where people from Maastricht go when they have made it, and where they do not leave. A house here only comes free when a life changes. And by then it has often already been sold before I hear of it: to the children, to the neighbours, to someone who sent a letter years ago that turned out to have been kept.

    Mergelweg · Lage Kanaaldijk · Luikerweg · Parkweg · postcode 6212

  • Buying a house in Scharn

Scharn is one of the Maastricht neighbourhoods outside the ring roads where people buy a house with a garden and then stay. You have the city within cycling distance and the Heuvelland around the corner, and you do not give that up easily. If something does come free, the street usually knows first, and the house goes to a neighbour or to someone who had once let the owner know that he wanted to live here.

Scharnerweg · Wethouder van Caldenborghlaan · Burgemeester Cortenstraat · Dampstraat · postcode 6224

  • Buying a house in Biesland

Little comes up for sale in Biesland. Those who live here often have a detached house or a semi-detached house with a sizeable garden, on the edge of the city and yet close to the centre, and see little reason to leave. If a house does come free, it has often already been discussed in the street, and it goes to someone who knew the owner or to a family that had come forward earlier.

    Bieslanderweg · Porthoslaan · Athoslaan · Aramislaan · postcode 6213
